Vajradhara, the Primordial Buddha, 2006

pastel and ink on paper

35 x 26 inches

Vajradhara represents the source of all the manifestations of enlightenment. His arms crossed at the wrists is a gesture symbolizing enlightenment, which is defined in Buddhism by the union of compassion and wisdom, with the vajra in his right hand representing compassion, and the bell in his left hand representing wisdom. This image was taken from a 15th c. Tibetan thanka.
