Gandhara Buddha, 2012

Acrylic on canvas

50 x 38 inches

This work is based on a 4th century AD bas-relief sculpture from Gandhara, an area in Pakistan located along the Silk Road. This work depicts the preaching Buddha. While this form usually refers to Gautama preaching his first sermon at Sarnath after his enlightenment, the sculpture from which this image is taken shows the Buddha preaching to an assembly that may be a depiction of a pure land. I placed the Buddha on a column to complement the classical style of the sculpture.
