Lamas are Tibetan Buddhist teachers.  The positions in which they hold their hands (mudras) indicate that they are speaking about a religious subject.  Each is seated on a lotus throne, with his back supported by a cushion.  The images were taken from a 12th century Tibetan double portrait (thanka).
